New Zealand, called Aotearoa in the Maori language, forms the biggest landmass within the polynesian region.

New Zealand resp. the New Zealand region contains also Macquarie Island and the Norfolk Islands, which both politically belong to Australia.

The flora of this region has not much affinities with the flora of the tropical Polynesia but shares some similarities with the flora of Tasmania.

The number of endemic species is very large, most of them can be found in the northernmost part of the North Island.
