left:ISS002-E-10044 Image courtesy of the Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center. http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov Ducie This atoll consits of four islands, the larger Acadia Island in the north as well as the smaller to tiny islands Westwar Island in the southwest, Pandora Island and Edwards Island in the southeast. These islands together form a land area of only 700 m sq and hem a lagoon of only 1,5 km sq. Especially the small islands in the southern part of the atoll are unprotected against the destruction of tropical storms. The vegetation is very poor, which is a consequense of regularly storms. The Ducie Atoll is an importend breeding area for several seabird species, landbirds are absent. |
