| above: This island had once the name 'Te Pito o te Henua' (hub of the world), only about hundred years ago it got the actual name Rapa Nui. If one talks about Easter Island or Rapa Nui, it is mostly about the colossal statues, the Moai. Noboby can realy imagine what this island may have looked like before the colonisation by polynesian people. Based on subfossil pollen various plant species could be proven, all extinct today. Only some endemic species, most of them fern species and grasses, have survived until today. The only still existing endemic tree, the Toromiro (Sophora toromiro), is extinct in the wild and can only be seen in several botanical gardens. ... for more information click on island or name |
