The main island of the Society Islands, Tahiti, is deemed as an epitome of Polynesia. But many things which seem to be, for the visitor's eye, typically polynesian, are in fact imported, even the national flower of Tahiti, the Tiare Tahiti (Gardenia taitensis) is not native but comes from Melanesia.

The pristine vegetation can only be found in the interior of the islands and there mostly on steep mountainsides. Large areals, above all on Tahiti, are now covered by imported Miconias and other alien plants.
