above: The Tuamotu Islands consist of 76 atolls and some islands like Makatea in the northwest or the Gambier Islands in the southeast. The number of plant species is altogether not large, but there are some endemic species. E.g. the Makatea Palm (Pritchardia vuylstekeara) from Makatea Island and the Niau Myrsine (Myrsine niauensis) from the Niau Atoll. Mangareva Island and some of the others of the so-called Gambier Islands are today much overgrazed and lost many of their former endmic species. |
