| above: As the Gambier Islands in principle rate only those islands around the island of Mangareva, which are the vestiges of the collapsed crater of a large volcano, of which the former caldera constitutes the present lagoon.. The Temoe atoll is sometimes included into the Gambiers because of its geografical vicinity. The Gambier Islands are in fact just a part of the Tuamotu Archipealgo, but will be mentioned separately because of their geological features. Today the native vegetation of the islands is almost completely destroyed, especially the higher locations are almost completely bare and very eroded, many species are extinct, some only localy, others, formerly endemic forms, unfortunately completely. Only seven endemic plant forms are known so far, most of them live or lived on the island of Mangareva, the largest island of the archipelago. ... for more information click on island or name |
